"...First amendment speech is apparently non-negotiable in Warren's world too. He tried to strong-arm the firsttime author of PyroMarketing into removing all mentions of the Purpose Driven Life from his book, since Warren didn't like the way the book candidly addressed the aggressive marketing campaign of PDL. PyroMarketing author Greg Stielstra (who helped market PDL) was outraged that a better-selling author was 'allowed to interfere with the content of his book.' Stielstra says he ultimately reached a compromise with the publisher HarperCollins/Zondervan, but the book's publication was delayed for several months due to Warren's attempts to censor its content. The final version was slightly altered to appease Warren.
Stielstra says he was surprised by the publisher's request and deeply disappointed by Warren's actions, 'I've offered to fly to California or meet him in other cities along his travels so we can resolve our differences according to Jesus' instructions in Matthew 18, but Warren has never replied.'" --Robert Lanham
The book is political/religious satire. Lanham is a talented writer with a clever wit and the book is genuinely funny, but he is also sharply critical of Evangelicals. People of faith may take offense. Then again, you might react as I did. I'm comfortable with my faith, but uncomfortable at times with the way some Christian leaders represent Christianity to the media and his book is a reminder that when we try to stamp our personal or political agenda with the imprimatur of faith, we expose Christianity to criticism that rightfully belonged to us alone. Spread the fire. GS
